We Love Scandals

September 15, 2007

Yes, I'm new to this blogging thing.  So many sites, so many controls.  There are things I want to do to make this more readable but you'll have to bear with me as my learning curve only starts to make its way up (or so I hope).

Anyway, it's been a hot month for scandals everywhere.  In the NFL alone,  Micheal Vick pleaded guilty of dogfighting (after lying in the face of the commish)last month and you'd think they'd be scandal-free when the season started last week.  Lo and behold, super coach Belechick gets involved in what's known as the Videogate scandal.

On the local front, I know everybody's been sick to death of the Wowowee scandal (sorry, no link to this as ABS seems to have gotten to the YouTube videos… there may still be some floating vids out there though).  I know people want to ask this insider if there was cheating or not.  I'm the kind of person who always gives people the benefit of the doubt so while I may believe that there was no cheating involved, I do believe that the game/box designer was absolutely stupid.  Anytime you can have two numbers in a box (never mind that the zero is a staple number), what's to prevent you from getting one or the other?  Just plain stupidity and it took that to get rid of the game's producers (were they also responsible for the Ultra stampede mismanagement, I don't know).

Anyway, for a different kind of scandal, sex scandals are still king.  Kudos to Disney for forgiving Vanessa Hudgens and for getting the High School Musical brand into the scandal scene.  I can discuss this in more detail but most people don't like reading long blogs and I'm just warming up on the learning curve.  What I will say is that if it worked for someone as skanky as Paris, a scandal like this may shoot Vanessa into superstardom.

Well, that's it for now.  Stay tuned next week (really, but no promises for me to go on a weekly basis afterwards) when I do a homage to Time's Influential TV programs article… local style.

State of the Nation

June 29, 2007

Rather than talk about who I am or what I’m about, I’ll go straight into this week’s entry.

It is now June 29, over a whole month since the May 11 elections and they have not yet finished the vote counting. On the news (be it TV PATROL WORLD or 24 ORAS) the headlines are about Pimentel and Zubiri fighting over that last seat on the Senate. Apparently magic is being created in the manual counting of the Southern votes. If only that counting magic works on my bank account.

So the Philippines is still stuck in the past. We may have bought the machines to bring our country to the modern (well… since those machines are a few years old, they’re quickly becoming obsolete) but they’re gathering dust in some storeroom. I think the main reason for them being there is because of political fear that someone may pull a Micah (who managed to rig the New York election causing Nathan Petrelli to win in HEROES).

Just some time ago, I was in an Airsoft store when a bodyguard for a provincial Congressman told the stories about how all factions were cheating in the elections. From bribes in envelopes to armed goons threatening voters and even the use of cellphone jammers, winning an election here isn’t even about platform or issues anymore.

My belief is, it isn’t about the fear of cheating. Heck, as the bodyguard says, they all cheat. I think it’s about the money.
